What truly fascinates the artist Refik Anadol about art is its ability to shift perception, spark wonder, and reveal hidden worlds.
I like to say that AI is not just a tool but a collaborator in reimagining what art can be. It extends my imagination, allowing me to see patterns and possibilities that no human alone could process.
Data must be used with respect. At the Studio, we only work with ethically sourced, consented, or publicly available data, and we design processes that are transparent and accountable.
A sense of wonder. I want audiences to leave my installations feeling that the world is larger, more mysterious, and more interconnected than they realized. At the same time, I want them to feel that they are part of that story, that data belong to all of us. It must be felt, not just seen.
Dataland is in its final stages of development in downtown Los Angeles, and it is the most ambitious project of my life. It is a living laboratory and inspiring space where audiences can experience generative art powered by real-time data, immersive technologies, and ethical AI.
It will not be about machines alone, but about the relationships we build with them. I believe we are moving toward a future where AI is deeply integrated into the fabric of daily life — from healthcare to ecology to art — and the real revolution will be learning how to use that integration responsibly.
Refil Anadol Studio is a collective of architects, researchers, engineers, and storytellers.
